https://app.empowering.cloud/briefings/161/What-is-Microsoft-Privileged-Identity-Management-(PIM)

Shaun Refern, M365 Modern Workplace Consultant at Nasstar explains Microsoft Privileged Identity Management (PIM):

  • Microsoft Privileged Identity Management (PIM) is an Azure AD service for controlling and monitoring access to Microsoft Online resources.
  • PIM allows delegation of roles, such as user admin, teams admin, and exchange admin, with features like eligibility and time constraints.
  • PIM is beneficial because it reduces the impact of compromised accounts and requires privilege elevation for attackers.
  • Licensing requirements include Azure AD Premium P2 for eligible assignments, approvals, and access reviews.
  • PIM setup involves configuring active and eligible roles, activation time, MFA, justification, approvals, and notifications.
  • Lack of uptake in PIM may be due to licensing requirements or lack of knowledge about the tool
  • Discussion points include whether PIM should be free with Azure AD and whether separate admin accounts are still necessary.
